That's the whole purpose of the chemical - it protects the seeds of the chili plants from mammals, while the seeds can be eaten and distributed by birds. <BR/><BR/>Birds will in turn not digest the seeds (where the capsaicin concentration is highest), but excrete them unharmed and able to grow.
