Every Halloween, the Krispy Kreme chain brings out its pumpkin-shaped doughnuts with orange glaze.

But apparently in Hong Kong, the company has adapted its offerings of goulish fried dough to a more tolerant clientele, including a chocolate glazed doughnut with maggot sprinkles.

At close up, they're not really maggots, but some kind of palatable confection made to resemble squirmy crawlies.

That's just what I need. How many times have I bitten into a creme-filled doughnut wondering if I might find an unexpected ingredient?

  • Speaking of donuts with unexpected ingredients, I was in a Mister Donut in Tokyo last year, and ordered what I guessed was some sort of apple cinnamon donut, only to find out that it was filled with cold, thick, congealed brown curry sauce. With little chunks of... something, maybe carrots, maybe meat, who knows. Yum.
